The Jefferson City Fire Department is considering moving to 48-hour shifts to improve firefighters' health while still providing quality service.
The Jefferson City Public Safety Committee voted Thursday to advance the Fire Department's proposal to switch to 48.5-hour shifts, with 96 hours off, to the Jefferson City Council for further discussion.

First, there's anxiety over the cancer diagnosis.
Then, there's anxiety over how to pay for the treatment.
Ryker Haselden, 49, called his prostate cancer diagnosis in 2017 a "gut-punch."
He's been a firefighter in Mississippi for about two decades.
Haselden has two children, one of whom is developmentally disabled, so his wife is a full-time mother.

VIDEO: In just one week, thousands of firefighters from across the world will climb the Columbia Tower in Seattle for a great cause. But on Sunday, firefighters from Spokane County Fire District 9 settled for a StairMaster at the Fred Meyer off North Division instead.
The stairclimb team -- made up of 16 firefighters -- asked for donations for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society while switching off on the stair climber.

One woman and a firefighter had to be treated for minor injuries after a house fire Saturday night.
At about 7:00 p.m., crews responded to the 4000 block of N Pittsburg St. after reports of heavy black smoke coming from a home, according to the Spokane Fire Department.
Crews found heavy smoke coming from the front door and significant fire throughout the first floor of the home.
