Wytheville (VA) Welcomes New Fire Apparatus

It’s the department’s newest vehicle. Rescue Engine No. 1 will go on fire calls but will also serve as a vehicle rescue unit. Firefighters, who got their first look at the truck Monday, were impressed.

 

The 2018 Pierce Enforcer Rescue Engine was purchased from Atlantic Emergency Solutions for almost $560,000. It was previously used as a demonstration model, which helped cut down on the cost, Fire Chief Marc Brade said.

Bothell Fire Department welcomes new truck with time-honored tradition

The Bothell Fire Department welcomed one of two new Pierce fire engines into service with a “push-in” ceremony on Feb. 23. This special tradition has been a source of pride in the fire service for more than 100 years. Bothell Fire PIO Kirsten Clemens said the origin of the ceremony dates back to horse-drawn equipment, when the horses could not back-up the fire engines.

Sounding the alarm in Nebraska: Increased cancer risks among Omaha firefighters spark policy changes

VIDEO: They put their lives on the line, but fire isn't the only danger. KETV NewsWatch 7 Investigates discovered dozens of Omaha firefighters were treated for cancer in a 20-month period. “Just by chance, I went to the first cancer class for firefighters right after all the studies started coming out,” said Frank Corcoran, vice president of the Omaha Professional Firefighters Association.

Widow of Houston fire captain sues Motorola over radios used in 2013 Southwest Inn inferno

The widow of a Houston fire captain is suing Motorola over allegations that faulty radios were to blame for the massive brain injury her husband suffered during the deadly 2013 Southwest Inn blaze. William “Iron Bill” Dowling was among more than a dozen firefighters injured in Houston Fire Department’s deadliest tragedy when the hotel roof collapsed 12 minutes into the five-alarm call.

The decon challenge: Routine firefighting can expose firefighters to substantial cancer risk.
