Stakeholders in the county’s ambulance service say the Jan. 1 transition to city control went off without a hitch.
“We’re starting to turn from setting up the system to the maintenance of it,” county EMS Director Jeff Sargent said.
Sedro-Woolley, Mount Vernon and Burlington are now the primary providers of emergency medical services in central Skagit County, taking the place of the Central Valley Ambulance Authority.

New street signs and addresses are making it easier for people unfamiliar with the Eastern Washington University campus in Cheney to find their way around, including first responders.
The university undertook the Campus Fire Life Safety Signage project to bring it into compliance with the 2015 International Fire Code, which requires buildings to have addresses visible from the street, said EWU Fire Protection Engineer Mike Lunneborg.

The Spokane Valley Fire Department is going high tech with new air packs that include several features to improve firefighter safety and make the gear easier to use and clean.
“Our air packs were 12 years old,” said Battalion Chief Ken Capaul. “They met a NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standard that was 10 years old.
