It's been about six years since Jon Sprague's career with Spokane Valley Fire came to an end because of a disagreement over religious emails he sent to fellow firefighters with his work account. That disagreement resulted in a six-year legal battle which eventually made its way to the state supreme court.

A fire ripped through a home in Orchards early Sunday morning, severely damaging the building and displacing the family of six living there. Firefighters from the Vancouver Fire Department and Clark County Fire District 3 were called to the house, 15505 N.E. 83rd St., around 1:50 a.m. Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Bryan Fredrickson said responding firefighters arrived to find fire coming from the rear of the house on the second floor and an outbuilding engulfed in flames.

For the state’s Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz, the smoky air that continues to choke the Inland Northwest each summer is a sign that Washington will have to battle wildfires independently in the future. “We tried to find additional air support outside,” Franz said in an interview this week, after a 2018 wildfire season that resulted in more than 1,850 blazes in Washington, the most in the state’s history.
