Three South Portland firefighters were training with a new $1.1 million ladder truck Tuesday morning when they accidentally hit a power line with the truck’s aerial, according to a statement released by City Manager Scott Morrelli Tuesday night.
The contact with the electrical line caused a fire to the truck’s front right tire and shorted the controls of the aerial, keeping the firefighters from moving the extendable ladder away from the line, Morrelli said.

A lot of things had to go right for retired Chehalis Fire Department Chief Bill Nacht to still be around today.
His friend Ed Sylvia had to give him a call, telling Nacht to wait for him at Linda’s Fish and Chips in South Bend so they could ride their motorcycles to the coast together. Nacht was planning on taking the trip alone.

Chelan Fire and Rescue has received a state honor for its innovative efforts to serve citizens.
The department and its leadership/management team earned the second-place award in the B Class category at the Washington State Fire Commissioner Association fall conference last week in Spokane.
Chelan Fire and Rescue competed against fire departments in the state with budgets between $2 million and $4 million in the Management Excellence Award Program.

A Spokane Valley firefighter who was seriously injured in a bike crash in June is urging people to wear a helmet.
Montana Sturges, 24, just returned to work last week at Spokane Valley Fire Station 10, after four months of recovery.
Sturges and his girlfriend were riding their bikes on a quiet street just a few blocks from home in Coeur d’Alene when the crash happened.

A phone call from a concerned resident in Washington state ended up saving the life of a German woman who was attempting to hike through the Cascades to the Canadian border without the proper gear as snow and cold hit the region on Monday. Nancy Abel of Sultan, Washington originally met the German woman, Katharina Groene, about a week ago as she was hiking near Stevens Pass.
