Vestavia Hills has multiple locations that are prone to flooding and often challenge the capabilities of early arriving rescue units. This award allows all companies to arrive at flooding events and impact the survivability of victims prior to the arrival of specialized resources.

Car Crashes into La Jolla (CA) Fire Station

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. at San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s station 9. The car veered off the road and crashed into the patio wall of the station, while crews were eating dinner, according to Battalion Chief Joseph Scuri. The car missed the firefighters by about 12 feet. No one was injured.  

Three people were in the car at the time, but were also not injured. A natural gas line to an outdoor barbeque was hit and severed. Firefighters quickly turned off the gas to the station. SDG&E came out and repaired it.

Ventura (IA) Firefighter Hurt After Fire Apparatus Rolls Into Ditch

Doug Phinney, 65, was driving the Ventura Protective Association's 2000 Freightliner Pumper fire truck after leaving a fire scene about 9:34 p.m.   

Phinney turned too short onto Balsam Avenue from 170th Street, the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff's Office said in a news release, causing the truck to roll onto its top in the ditch. 

Clear Lake Ambulance transported him to Mercy Medical Center--North Iowa with minor injuries.

Florence (AL) Fire Apparatus Out of Commission After Accident with Two Cars

Firefighters say Engine 14 was responding to a medical call with lights and sirens. As the engine was turning right, one car ran into its side. The second car rear-ended the truck just after that, police said.  

No one was injured.

Six Hurt in Collision with Chicago Fire Apparatus

The Chicago Fire Department confirmed Engine 109 was responding to a call when a van struck the back of the fire truck near 31st and California.  

Four adults and two children were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, all in critical condition, the fire department said.
