Legislation proposed in Idaho to cover PTSD for firefighters, police

In the last year, Eagle Fire Battalion Chief Rob Shoplock has taken calls from three fellow firefighters who had suicidal thoughts because of what they experienced on the job. All three sought counseling, but they paid for it out of their own pocket because it wasn’t covered by workers’ compensation.

Indiana fire department treasurer sentenced to 15 months; restitution tab now $754,000

Firefighters in a rural Hamilton County township couldn’t figure out why they had no funds to buy medical supplies for their ambulance. Their property tax levy, bringing in about $220,000 annually for firefighting, should have been enough to cover the needs of the Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department east of Noblesville.

Bremerton fire chief suddenly fired by the mayor

Bremerton firefighters say they're shocked by the news that their fire chief has been fired by the mayor. David Schmitt had only been on the job a year-and-a-half and moved to Bremerton from Southern California to take the job. But Mayor Greg Wheeler has the power to fire department heads, and that's what he did.

Kennewick leaders announce upgrades, safety improvements to Zintel Canyon after fires

Multiple departments with the city of Kennewick are teaming up to make improvements in Zintel canyon. This after dealing with nine fires along the trail this summer, some burning dangerously close to homes. The city hosted a meeting for canyon neighbors addressing their concerns Wednesday night. Deia Johnson says she's lived in Kennewick for years, but before Thursday she'd never heard of Zintel Canyon.
