East Pittston fire station debuts with more space, technology

The red-roofed white building, which stands where East Pittston and Kelley roads meet, is where 21st-century technology meets age-old practice.

Among the innovations that Farris and Ireland — for whom the station has been named — brought to the design of the building were the addition of a blower mounted to the ceiling to maintain the temperature inside the bays to augment the radiant heat floors, waterproof wall panels backed with plywood to minimize water damage and allow racks to be hung anywhere on the walls, and windows in the south-facing bay doors, which helps warm the space on sunny days.

TargetSolutions to Unveil Firefighter Cancer Prevention Training at FDIC International

TargetSolutions, a Vector Solutions brand offering the leading online training and records management system for public safety agencies, announced today an all-new training course, “NFPA® 1851 – Cancer-Related Risks of Firefighting,” will be released April 23, the first day of FDIC International 2018.

The video-based training guided by the NFPA’s 1851 Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting, aims to provide a thorough understanding of fire service-related cancer risks for today’s firefighters. The two-hour course features real-life scenarios, engaging interactions, and 13 learning modules for departments to educate personnel on the dangers facing firefighters and what actions they can take to reduce risk.

“TargetSolutions recognizes just how serious of an issue this is for today’s fire service,” said Marc Scheipe, who serves as executive vice president for Vector Solutions’ public sector business unit. “With that understanding comes a responsibility to create training courses that can make a difference. This course outlines the importance of care and cleaning for turnout gear, how to maintain and inspect PPE (personal protective equipment), and best practices for decontamination, isolation, and reporting of equipment-related issues. The course goes a long way to educate fire service members on how they can mitigate risk.”

In addition to a thorough review of proper PPE management, the course interprets key terminology related to the NFPA 1851 standard, explains how protective ensembles interface with bodily organs and the lymphatic system, and presents eight of the most common carcinogens a firefighter may face in today’s homes.

“NFPA® 1851 – Cancer-Related Risks of Firefighting” will be on display at booth No. 13034 during FDIC’s exhibit hours, which begin Thursday, April 26 and runs through Saturday, April 28 at the annual conference in Indianapolis.

TargetSolutions will also be demonstrating an exciting new web-based application during FDIC. TargetSolutions Check It™ operations management software is built to simplify routine maintenance inspections of trucks, tools, medical supplies, drugs, and other items logged in inventory records. Thousands of agencies already manage training and compliance with TargetSolutions’ unrivaled technology platform. Now, that innovation extends to a mobile device for truck and equipment inspections.

“With TargetSolutions Check It, routine checks are simplified, and the data is easily accessible through the TargetSolutions platform,” said Scheipe. “TargetSolutions Check It gives Fire and EMS agencies insight into their inventory, so that they can spot issues in real time. This is the kind of technology TargetSolutions strives to deliver because it makes agencies more efficient and effective.”

TargetSolutions will also present this new functionality in FDIC’s 2018 Emerging Technologies Summit and Pavilion, which is focused on advancing technology in the fire service. TargetSolutions will discuss its latest innovations, including virtual reality training capabilities, in the 500 Ballroom during the event scheduled to run Wednesday, April 25 through Friday, April
