Texas fire chief loses his battle with cancer

It was just after 10 a.m. on Monday when dispatch said the words many people in Howard County did not want to hear, “End of watch for Tommy Sullivan.” Tommy served as a volunteer firefighter for Howard County for 35 years, but he was much more than that to many that worked alongside of him. Sullivan was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer back in March and had been dealing with health issues after having part of his right leg amputated in 2017.

Rhode Island city pays firefighters $6.1M to finalize OT settlement

The book is officially closed on a years-long dispute between the city of Providence and its firefighters now that the city paid $6.1 million to settle state and federal lawsuits regarding overtime payments in recent years. For first time in decades, Pennsylvania city's annual service honors firefighters killed in line of duty

Michigan firefighters surprise late chief's daughter at graduation

For Emily Switalski, graduating from Western Michigan University was bittersweet. Her father Comstock Township Fire Chief Ed Switalski was killed in the line of duty in June. He was hit by a vehicle while responding to an accident call on I-94. “You know, after these things happen, life keeps moving on and you have to kind of just roll with the punches,” Emily Switalski told 24 Hour News 8 Monday.

Worker hurt in fall from Seattle skyscraper but lands in net

Seattle firefighters were called to a skyscraper under construction where a worker, believed to have fallen several stories, landed in a net. It happened at Eighth Avenue and Lenora Street in downtown Seattle shortly before 11 a.m. Monday. Scanner traffic, which has not been confirmed, indicated the man fell eight stories, from the 20th floor to the 12th floor, and landed in a safety net.
