Small Beaver Creek Fire proves even smaller than thought; Little Camas Fire winding down

A National Forest fire estimated at six acres in size 12 miles northeast of Leavenworth turned out to be just two acres, and firefighters achieved full containment. The revised estimate Beaver Creek Fire, reported Tuesday morning in the timberlands of the Wenatchee River Ranger District, was reached using GPS.

Firefighters take control of fire that threatened town of Vantage

Firefighters have contained 50 percent of a brush fire that spread across thousands of acres in Eastern Washington on Tuesday, shutting down Interstate-90 and forcing a temporary evacuation of a Columbia River town. "We made excellent progress yesterday," Randy Sheppard, a spokesman for the state's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) who's in charge of monitoring the Ryegrass Coulee Fire, said in a phone interview on Wednesday.

Wisconsin firefighter killed, several injured in explosion

One firefighter was killed and several other people, including police officers, firefighters and civilians were injured in an explosion in Sun Prairie Tuesday night. The explosion happened at 7:05 p.m. at the intersection of Main and Bristol streets after police said they were called to the area around 6:20 p.

The Last 9/11 Fire Chief Bows Out

Joe Pfeifer had a date in mind for retiring from the job he has done for 37 years. It would be the second Wednesday after Labor Day. After schools were back. Sept. 12. He could hardly wait. Then he decided, no, he wouldn’t delay. “Do some sailing,” he said. “Decompress.” So this will be his last week with the Fire Department, retiring as an assistant chief from the agency where he started as a 25-year-old from Queens in 1981.
