Rex Strickland couldn’t be further from home.
Coming from a county in Virginia whose eastern edge rubs against the nation’s capital, the Spokane Fire Department’s newest deputy fire chief is used to the rain. Lots of rain. And the people. Even more of them.
That means he’s also acclimated to a bit more action than he’ll get in the other Washington’s second biggest city.

A growing community has growing needs, and the story is no different when it comes to the Cypress-Fairbanks Volunteer Fire Department. The department's newest facility, along Westgreen Blvd near Bridgeland in Cypress, started operating a few weeks ago. It's their 13th station, but it won't be their last.
Now, the 19,000 square feet, $5 million facility is nearly complete and ready for the grand opening to be held at the station Aug. 25 at 10 a.m.
Â
At the celebration, Padovan said they’ll have bounce houses and snacks along with tours of the station and trucks. They’ll also invite the public to participate in a ceremonial “push-in” of one of the fire trucks into the station.
