VIDEO - Rob Hecksel, a retired firefighter diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February, was hoping for a long second career as a social worker.
He’s trying to compress that mission into his remaining time.
Hecksel, 51, of Lansing was a battalion chief with the Lansing Fire Department. He retired three years ago after a 25-year career but wanted to find another job that he loved and that improved the lives of others.

Investigators were looking for the cause of a fire responsible for an estimated $50,000 in damage to a Dottie Drive home Thursday afternoon.
Firefighters from Selah, Gleed and the Army’s Yakima Training Center went to the fire at the single-story home just west of town around 3:40 p.m. Smoke was coming from inside the house and under the roof eaves, said Selah Deputy Fire Chief Jim Lange.

Everett firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze at the Colby Square Apartments in the 2200 block of Colby Avenue late Thursday night.
The Everett Fire Marshal said that all 14 units in the two-story apartment were left uninhabitable. He didn't know the number of residents who lived there, but he noted that the Red Cross was on the scene to help those displaced.
