If you've ever been to Old Fort Niagara, perhaps you can picture the narrow 19th-century gateways that lead into the popular Youngstown tourist attraction. Getting fire equipment into the fort has long been a problem for local firefighters. That's why officials recently announced a new fire safety system capable of squeezing into such a tight space.
The custom-built trailer, equipped with nearly one thousand feet of hoses, a generator, dry hydrant, ladder and other tools, was funded by a $20,000 state grant. Old Fort Niagara Executive Director Robert Emerson told WBFOÂ the previous method for dealing with fires was inadequate.

Police in Olympia say a 35-year-old woman died after emergency crews tried to sedate her early Wednesday.
Olympia firefighters responded to a fire alarm at an apartment complex on the 1200 block of Fern Street Southwest shortly after 1 a.m. The woman pulled the fire alarm “while in crisis ... apparently suffering from mental illness and/or acute effects of substance use,” according to a news release.

In a memo sent to her staff, Austin Fire's first female chief, Rhoda Kerr, has announced she will soon leave the department to take on a role in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Kerr told the Austin Fire Department staff Wednesday that she plans to retire July 1 to start her "new adventure as the new Fire Chief in Fort Lauderdale.

A memo released Wednesday shows that two Kokomo firefighters engaged in a physical altercation last month over a city contract proposal that was rejected by the local fire union.
The fight, which led to both firefighters receiving written reprimands, came just one day after a rally at City Hall attended by roughly 200 people in support of the Professional Firefighters of Kokomo Local 396.
