Benton County Fire District #4 sends gear to New York teen battling cancer

A New York teen is getting clothes from a local fire department as part of his wish to represent firefighters from around the country while he battles cancer. Timmy Richardson was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this month and is now undergoing treatment at a hospital in Buffalo. Timmy comes from a family of firefighters, and he has grown up with plans to become a firefighter his whole life.

Spokane Fire Lookout Museum and UI exhibition offer unique perspectives on wildland firefighting

Smokey the Bear has his own bedroom at Ray Kresek's north Spokane home, situated on what resembles a pine tree clearing in the National Forest. Really, though, it's Kresek's homage to bygone days of wildland firefighting at his Fire Lookout Museum. Thirty varieties of regional conifers and other native shrubbery fill most of Kresek's 1-acre plot, forming the backdrop for a unique structure in his backyard: a nearly 90-year-old fire lookout cabin.

Cullman (AL) Fire Station to Open Next Week

The new station features four bays, classroom, lodging for firefighters and an operations and administrative center. Fire Station No. 1 at City Hall will also remain staffed and in operation, as well as No. 2 in the west side of the city.

Mold Problem Fixed at Helotes (TX) Fire Station

After the fire station was built eight years ago, it didn't take long for firefighters to notice a problem. The biggest issue was the mold growing inside.  

Over the years, City Spokesperson Andrea Waizer said the city ran several tests, made repairs, and had consultants look at ways to fix the issue.

"The process took awhile because instead of initially just replacing all six systems, which is costly for taxpayers, we wanted to see if we could do it for a repair process instead," she said.

However, the ventilation was not in good condition. So, in December, the council voted to pay $65,000 to reconfigure and replace the existing HVAC system. About three months into the change, the chief said the air is clean and the system is working well.
