When Sara Errinton joined the Syracuse Fire Department, she was shown a list of fire stations where she couldn't work. She was a woman, and those stations didn't have coed facilities.
Soon after, when she asked to be part of the hazardous materials team, she was again told no. A woman of child-bearing age shouldn't be around hazardous materials, officials told her.

Nearly half a million smoke alarms nationwide are being recalled due to a risk of failure to alert consumers to a fire, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.
About 452,000 Kidde dual-sensor (photoelectric and ionization) smoke alarms sold in the U.S. and another 40,000 sold in Canada may be defective, the warning states.

Limington town officials say a “stand-down” order for the fire department has been lifted after it was determined that its firefighting gear meets Maine standards.
Selectmen in the York County town on Saturday ordered volunteer firefighters not to respond to fires because it appeared their gear was out of compliance with national standards that say the equipment should be retired 10 years after it is manufactured.

Wildland firefighters expect the Pacific Northwest to see another busy fire season this year with land around Yakima especially vulnerable.
“If I were to pick one place that might experience above-average fire danger, it’s the Yakima Valley and the eastern slopes” of the Cascade Mountains, said Josh Clark, a meteorologist with the state Department of Natural Resources.

Construction costs exceed budget by about $66,000 Additional expenses and completion plans related to the Stockton ambulance station now under construction dominated the Cedar County Ambulance District board meeting Monday, March 19. The board was told by contractor Lynden Kenney, Kenney Construction, the expected completion date is April 15, with a final review and walk through to follow.
When the station is opened, the ambulance district will set up office in a section of the building and all future board meetings will be held in Stockton. Currently, the board alternates its monthly meetings between El Dorado Springs and Stockton. If the station is completed by late April, then the March meeting in El Dorado Springs would be the final meeting in the city.

In his report to the board, Kenney presented an outline of unforeseen costs which he wanted the board to approve. Kenney listed each cost and explained them. His outline of final costs brought the project's overall costs in above budget by $65,861.
