Red Wing City Council (MN) Approves Fire Apparatus Purchase

After much discussion, Red Wing City Council approved purchasing a fire truck next spring.Engine 3 is 32 years old and 12 years beyond its replacement age. The funding would be pulled from the city's 2018 budget with delivery in April 2018. Council members on Monday approved $587,022 for the purchase.
By signing the contract agreement early, the city will receive a discount of $6,800. The city has not yet approved a 2018 budget.

Norwalk (OH) Council Approves $43K Toward Used Fire Apparatus

Council unanimously passed a resolution that authorized Norwalk Finance Director Michelle Reeder to earmark the $50,000 in the general capital improvement for the two projects; $43,000 will go toward a used fire truck and $7,000 to repave the parking lot.
Sitting in the lot now is one of two vehicles that Chief John Soisson placed out of service Friday morning, a 1994 Freightliner pumper/tanker. Also out of commission is the department’s 1985 Gruman pumper. The two vehicles failed to pass a liability-related safety inspection by a trooper with the state Highway Patrol that was done at Soisson’s request.

San Diego Fire Agencies Get $100K Grant for Fire Equipment

To help protect the San Diego area from wildfires, San Diego Gas & Electric announced a $100,000 grant that will allow local emergency-services providers to purchase an array of essential equipment.
The six-figure award will allow the San Diego County Fire Authority and firefighting agencies in Alpine, Julian and Borrego Springs to obtain new state-of-the-art equipment, including upgraded maps and radios, self-contained breathing units, medical equipment, and mobile computers on fire engines, and will also pay for additional education and outreach on defensible space and other vital fire protections, according to SDG&E.

Elkhart (TX) City Council Votes to Evict VFD from City-Owned Fire Station

After more than 80 years of service, the Elkhart Volunteer Fire Department will shut down on Oct. 26. Members of the Elkhart City Council on Tuesday voted 5-0 to evict the fire department from its city-owned fire station downtown. One council-member, Rhonda Brewer, abstained.
The move will save the city of 1,321 people about $10,000 a year. The Elkhart Volunteer Fire Department started in 1936.

"We've been wrestling with this for quite a while," Elkhart Mayor Mike Gordon said. "It's time for it to end, so the city and the fire department can move on."

DeKalb County (GA) Firefighters Say Improvements Needed at Several Fire Stations

It will be up to DeKalb county voters to say yes to a one percent sales tax in November that will fund new fire stations.
The DeKalb County fire union posted a letter to Facebook that was an appeal to the board of county commissioners to allow a SPLOST vote in November. It would be a one cent sales tax that would go only to building and equipment improvements.
