Cecil fire officials accept chief's resignation for social media comments directed at Steelers coach

Officials at a Cecil Township fire department accepted the resignation of its chief Tuesday following outrage over his posting of a racial slur on social media, according to a statement posted on the township website. Ron Zombeck, president of Cecil Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 2 in Muse, said that the resignation of Paul Smith was accepted at noon Tuesday in light of outrage over a Facebook comment by Smith in response to the Pittsburgh Steelers' decision not to take the field Sunday for the national anthem.

Arson damages classrooms at high school in Gig Harbor

A fire set at Peninsula High School early Wednesday damaged a portable building but did not impact classes. The blaze was reported about 3 a.m. and was contained to a single portable building, which houses eight classrooms. “The campus is safe and secure, this is just a minor inconvenience today,” Principal Dave Goodwin wrote in a letter to parents.

Fire in storage yard in Kent burns RVs

Firefighters battled a blaze that has set at least two motorhomes and a utility trailer on fire Tuesday afternoon. Officials say crews are now mopping up. There are no injuries, and a cause is under investigation. The blaze is at a storage yard in at 26524 79th Ave. S.
