Oscar nominated documentary on opioid crisis features West Virginia fire chief

When the 2018 Oscar nominations were read off on Tuesday morning, Heroin(e), the Netflix documentary about the opioid crisis in Huntington, West Virginia, was amongst the films on the list to run for the prestigious movie award. Heroin(e), with its 40 minute running length, was among five films in the Best Documentary Short category.

Connecticut fire school struggles for funding

Local officials say the state is playing with fire by yanking funding to train some of Connecticut’s first responders. Regional fire schools help firefighters fulfill Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements and qualify for certifications, and the facilities provide live-burn training.

1 found dead after Mount Vernon house fire

One person was found dead after a two-alarm house fire Tuesday in Mount Vernon, emergency officials said. Crews responded to the scene, in the 1500 block of East Spruce Street, at about 3:40 a.m. after receiving reports of a home fully ablaze there, said Mount Vernon Fire Chief Bryan Brice. A second alarm was sounded and additional firefighters arrived on scene.

At least 1 missing after SUV plunges into water at Anacortes ferry dock

A rescue operation is underway after a Jeep Cherokee crashed through a barrier and plunged into the water at the Washington State Ferries terminal at Anacortes, officials said. At least one person was inside the vehicle. The emergency has forced the ferry system to suspend service between Anacortes and the San Juan Islands for several hours.

Puyallup: Extrication training group loses practice tools

A group who’s dedicated their lives to helping others, the Puyallup Extrication Team, needs the public’s help to continue their training program. Since 2000, the team has been training first responders in the art of extrication. This often includes training on how to use the ‘Jaws of Life’ to rescue people trapped as a result of car crashes.
