First responders meet baby they helped deliver at reception in Federal Way

South King Fire & Rescue firefighters and other local first responders first met Kylee Kuo April 6 at her grandmother’s house in Federal Way when they helped deliver the precocious baby intent on making an early arrival into the world. They met the now 7-month-old and her family for a second time at a — planned — special reception Monday at SKFR station 62 in Federal Way, where Kylee and her unconventional birth were once again celebrated and the infant received cuddles, two firefighter-themed onesies and the chance to meet her namesake, King County Medic One paramedic Kyle Waterman.

OKCFD Opens Two New Fire Stations

City leaders helped cut the ribbon at the new versions of Station 21 and Station 23 Monday, which are replacing their much older counterparts. They were some of the oldest fire stations that were still in service, built in 1951 and 1975 respectively, but these new state-of-the-art facilities are helping bring the department into the 21st century.

Inside the identical buildings, shiny new rigs, color-coded LED lights, personal bedrooms and personalized alert systems are not just for the looks. Fire Chief Richard Kelley says, “Everything is designed here to get them out of the fire station in a quick manner.”

The goal is to be gone in 60 seconds or less. When an emergency alert activates, red LED lights guide the way to the engine, signs above the doors to the garage flash the address of the call while a timer in the garage counts the seconds.

During a firefighter's 24-hour shift, alarms are programmed to sound for their individual duties. “It will only activate if their company gets an alarm rather than having to be woken up for no reason,” explains Battalion Chief Brian Stanaland.

Construction on Meridian's 6th fire station expected to start next spring

The Meridian Rural Fire District will pay up to $1.5 million for the new fire station’s operational costs over the first year or so, including firefighters’ wages and benefits. The district made this offer when the city considered pushing back construction to 2019.

There was some urgency to get the new station built because Meridian has only one fire station south of Interstate 84. This leads to longer emergency response times in that part of town, according to the fire department’s 2016 report.

Meridian last built a fire station nine years ago for $163 per square foot, Meridian Fire Chief Mark Niemeyer told City Council in July. Current costs, he said, are closer to $250 per square foot. The new station will tentatively be 12,580 square feet.

In July, the city estimated that the new station would cost $4.7 million in capital costs, including $3.15 million in construction, $314,500 for architectural design and $744,500 for a new fire engine.

These capital costs are eligible to be paid for by impact fees, which are generated from new development.
