Firefighter Critically Injured After Being Struck by Fire Vehicle

A D.C. firefighter was critically injured after he was struck by another fire department vehicle late Wednesday night.

The accident happened as firefighters were responding to a rowhouse fire on the 800 block of F Street NE at 11:30 p.m. 


Fire officials say 28-year-old Dane Smothers Jr. was preparing hose lines and other equipment when he was struck by a ladder truck arriving at the scene. Fire officials say Smothers' uncle, a D.C. firefighter, was also on the scene of the fire.

Smothers, a probationary firefighter, underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition. Fire officials say Smothers suffered multiple injuries above the waist.

Firefighters quickly contain brush fire near High Drive in Spokane

Firefighters responded to a brush fire near High Drive and 25th Ave. in Spokane Wednesday. The fire burned on a hillside in the area, but responding fire crews were able to quickly get the flames under control. There were no reports of injuries or structures damaged in the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

South Beach Regional Fire Authority gets major support in Aug. 1 primary

South Beach voters showed overwhelming support for the creation of the South Beach Fire Authority in the primary election Tuesday, including a 77.39 percent yes vote in the City of Westport for Proposition 1. The Regional Fire Authority would combine Grays Harbor County fire districts 3, 11 and 14 with Pacific County Fire District 5 and the City of Westport Fire Department into one.

Texas firefighter who was struck, killed while working wreck was a 'pillar of the department'

A Silsbee volunteer firefighter was killed Wednesday after being struck by a car while working a traffic accident. 12News has been asked to withhold the name of the firefighter until all family members have been notified. The firefighter was struck while working an accident along FM418 just east of Highway 92 according to Hardin County Sheriff Mark Davis.

Firefighter killed on Lolo Peak fire in Montana

A firefighter was killed while working the Lolo Peak fire Wednesday afternoon — the second firefighter death in Montana this fire season. Missoula County Sheriff T.J. McDermott said an official investigation to determine the cause of death is still underway. Dispatchers at the Lolo Peak fire said the man was given CPR after apparently being struck by a falling snag.
