NIST Study Suggests Frailty Makes Elderly More Likely to Die in Home Fires

A new study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows scientifically for the first time that an individual’s ability to respond quickly to a residential fire determines who dies and who gets injured. Home fire deaths, the NIST researchers state, are more likely among those they define as frail populations—persons who are not in robust health and primarily age 65 and older—while nonfatal injuries occur more often in adults ages 20 to 49.

Marysville house fire causes est. $200,000 in damage

A house fire Thursday afternoon on the15600 block of 11th Avenue Northeast in Marysville caused an estimated $200,000 in damage, according to the Marysville Fire District. No one was inside the house during the fire. One Marysville firefighter has been transported to the hospital as a precaution, the Fire District reports.

1 dead, 1 injured after I-90 fire triggers crash near Ellensburg

Authorities say one person has died and another was seriously injured in a crash on Interstate 90 near Ellensburg that happened after several vehicles and a semi-truck entered an area filled with wildfire smoke. Seattlepi.com reports a brush fire started in the freeway median late Thursday morning. Washington State Patrol Trooper Brian Moore says the crash, caused by low visibility due to smoke over the highway, involved the semi, a truck pulling a travel trailer, another truck and a car.

Man Steals East Moline (IL) Fire Apparatus, Nearly Crashes into River

One of East Moline, Illinois' newest fire trucks suffered heavy damage after a man almost drove it into the Mississippi River. Police say Nathan Stottler allegedly stole the fire truck while its crew was inside an East Moline business doing an inspection. Hampton resident Sharon Ayers knew something was wrong right away.
The police said Stottler allegedly stole the fire truck while it was parked outside a business in downtown East Moline. The crew was inside conducting an inspection. The truck wasn't on, but it wasn't locked either.
