Maryland Chief: Closed Valves, Limited Access and Type of Construction Hindered Response to 5-Alarm Fire

A five-alarm fire at a College Park, Maryland, apartment building burned much longer than it should have, putting firefighters and the public at unnecessary risk, according to College Park Fire Chief Bill Corrigan. The Fuse 47 building on Berwyn House Road was still under construction at the time of the fire.

Fire crews speculate fluke caused Hanford Reach Fire

The all-volunteer fire team from Franklin County Fire District 4 said they've timed it out and they think the Hanford Reach Fire in Franklin County might have started right around the peak of Monday's solar eclipse. Captain Michael Rattray said he knows how long it takes for wildfires to get going and the math checks out when compared it to the time they received the first call.

Blaze obliterates public works workshop in Toppenish

The Toppenish Public Works Department is expected to be back in operation Thursday morning, less than a day after a fire destroyed its workshop. “It might slow down some of our responses for water and sewer,” City Manager Lance Hoyt said Wednesday evening, as firefighters were spraying down the remains of the 108-year-old building at 8 Buena Way.

D.C. Fire Boat Sinks While Docked

The newest boat in the D.C. fire department’s three-vessel fleet sank Wednesday morning while docked at a marina at the Southwest Waterfront Park. Officials said they are investigating a possible mechanical failure.
The loss, at least temporarily, of Fireboat 3, a 29-foot-long boat built in 2014 at a cost of about $300,000, leaves the department’s coverage of the District waterways depleted.

The similarly sized Fireboat 2 was sold, and its replacement is about a month away from arriving, said Dabney Hudson, the president of the firefighter’s labor union; it was confirmed by a department spokesman.
