National Groups Hail Maine's New Flame Retardants Law

Firefighters and national chemical safety groups are praising Maine's new law banning flame retardants in furniture. Maine lawmakers this week overrode Republican Gov. Paul LePage's veto of a law that supporters said would reduce firefighters' exposure to carcinogens. Starting in 2019, a person can't sell upholstered furniture whose materials contain more than one percent of a flame-retardant chemical.

Faulty electrical equipment blamed for North Seattle apartment fire

A large fire at an apartment complex in North Seattle Saturday has been ruled accidental. Fire investigators determined the cause was from faulty electrical equipment in a kitchen on the second floor of the north side of the building. Heavy smoke on a hot Saturday afternoon made for extra tough conditions battling a three alarm fire at the Park Meridian Apartments in North Seattle.

Fire destroys apartment building in Cheney, injures two

A two-alarm fire tore through an apartment building that houses elderly, disabled and low-income people in Cheney on Saturday afternoon, sending at least two residents to the hospital and injuring a cat. The fire was reported about 2 p.m. in a four-unit building at the 100 Washington Square apartments.

Kittens in peril all over South Sound but firefighters come to rescue

A structure fire partially damaged a Thurston County home Saturday afternoon and gave two kittens smoke inhalation. In an unrelated incident a kitten became trapped in the wall of a Lacey apartment building. The West Thurston Regional Fire Authority was called to the fire in the 6500 block of 105th Ave.
