A law enforcement source at the scene says the fire truck was making a right-hand turn onto Union Road from Clover Place and cut the corner to close. The fire truck was not responding to an emergency.

The truck was purchased with a $500,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, with a $50,000 match from the city, the department said last year.

The engine replaces a truck that was 22 years old. Last year, Fire Chief Jeff Sorensen said the aging vehicle frequently required repairs and maintenance and, because many parts were not immediately available due to its age, it was out of service for extended periods.

Monroe Township has a new rescue pumper in operation that was obtained through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. Supervisor Alan Barron said the 2017 Pierce Arrow XT rescue pumper costs almost $628,000 and the federal grant covered more than $476,000 of the price. The township’s board of trustees agreed to cover the remaining costs of $151,767.

In Ida, the fire department also used grant funds to purchase needed equipment. The same program, which falls under Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), awarded the department $214,000. The grant funds will be used to replace the department’s aging self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and cascade system. This is the first grant the Ida Fire Department has been awarded through the AFG program.

Louisville Fire officials said four crew members were taken to University Hospital with minor injuries. The woman in the green sedan was taken to University Hospital, but her condition is not known.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene.
