Norwalk Fire Department Lands $43K for Thermal-Imaging Cameras

Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal announced that the city of Norwalk had been awarded a $43,619 Assistance to Firefighters Grant by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Firefighters use the cameras to see through darkness or smoke and search for victims, according to a statement released by the three Democratic lawmakers Thursday afternoon.

“This federal funding will allow the Norwalk Fire Department to replace old, dated equipment,” Blumenthal said in the statement. “Firefighters are constantly putting their lives on the line to save others, and the least we can do is ensure they are equipped with the most up-to-date technology and resources needed to do their jobs safely and effectively. I congratulate the Norwalk Fire Department on this new grant and thank the courageous firefighters for protecting the people of Norwalk.”

Earlier, Mayor Harry W. Rilling and Acting Fire Chief Gino Gatto joined Blumenthal at the Central Fire Station on Connecticut Avenue to announce the grant award. Gatto said the department plans to replace its four oldest, non-National Fire Protection Association-compliant cameras. Each is about 15 years old.

“These new cameras will provide a superior image quality, which will enable our firefighters to fully interpret a fire scene and make better, more informed tactical decisions,” Gatto said in the statement. “The Norwalk Fire Department is grateful for the awarding of this AFG grant. The city of Norwalk will see a substantial savings in this purchase.”

Donation to FSW Helps Purchase Training Ambulance

Florida SouthWestern State College recently utilized a $25,000 donation to purchase their own training ambulance for the school's Collier County campus. According to Teresa Araque, FSW's Communications Director, the donor requested that the funds be earmarked for the school's Emergency Medical Services Technology Program which trains students seeking paramedic or EMT certifications.

The ability to learn to operate inside an actual ambulance further enhances the school’s already state of the art training, Araque indicated.

“We have one of the most sophisticated simulation ER centers on our Collier campus in the world,” said Araque. “The simulated patients in their can react almost like humans, it’s pretty impressive to see.”

Joe Washburn, the director of the Emergency Services Program, explained that the ambulance would allow students to train in the complicated process of safely transferring a downed patient as well as teaching them how to work in the compact and moving environment of an emergency response vehicle.

“This ambulance means that our EMTs and paramedics can have hands-on experience with treating and then transporting patients in an ambulance,” said Washburn. “They graduate with not only the classroom knowledge they need but also the hands-on experience that makes them instrumental in saving lives in our community.”

Donor of $1 Million to Fund New Fire Station in Hallowell (ME)

HALLOWELL, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - In Hallowell, right next to the state capitol of Augusta, there is a mystery that only a few people in the city have the answer to. Someone has come forward and donated $1 million to build the community a new fire station.

The current station is more than 180 years old. It’s outdated and beginning to fall apart. When looking at their options, city officials considered contracting fire services with Augusta or moving the department to neighboring Farmingdale.

"We had seen some dwindling numbers of volunteers and we wanted to consider all options," said Mayor Mark Walker

The donor wanted no part of either plan.

"Strong feeling of independence," Walker said, "having it here would be best served for the citizens of Hallowell."

Los Lunas (NM) Council Approves Bid for New Fire Station

LOS LUNAS-The Los Lunas Village Council approved a contract for construction of the Los Lunas Fire Department west side fire station 2. Out of six bids, the nearly 80,000-square-foot facility will be built by T.A. Cole & Sons, who held the low bid at $4,045,000.

Adding gross receipts taxes, it’s about $4.4 million, said John Pate, vice president of architecture with Molzen Corbin.

“We got six bids that were all clustered within a couple $100,000 of each other, which always makes us feel a little bit better because that tells us it was a pretty tight ordeal and everybody was looking at the same things when they were putting their bids together,” Pate said.

However, construction costs are on the rise due to a number of projects underway in the Middle Rio Grande area, the architect said.

Included under mill levy funding is a ladder truck purchase that was also planned. A ladder truck will enable firefighters to get water to the center of fires and that will help contain them, said Los Lunas Fire Chief John Gabaldon.

Chief: No Additional Cost to Fire Station Project for Sinkhole Repairs

PALMYRA, Pa. (WHTM) - Palmyra Fire Chief Dave Dugan said Wednesday there is no additional cost to the new fire station building project for sinkhole repairs. Dugan released information on social media, saying the exact cause of the sinkhole is not known and cannot be determined.

The sinkhole did cause failure of a water main, which led to over 200,000 gallons of water to leak and cause further erosion.

Crews began the process of excavation Wednesday morning and will further evaluate the situation to determine the repair process.

The structure of the new building was not damaged, however, there was damage to the concrete ramp. The extent of the damage to the ramp and the repair plan for it has not been determined.
