Thousands of defects found on oil train routes

Government inspections of railroads that haul volatile crude oil across the United States have uncovered almost 24,000 safety defects, including problems similar to those blamed in derailments that triggered massive fires or oil spills in Oregon, Virginia, Montana and elsewhere, according to data obtained by The Associated Press.

Westport area fire and EMS personnel propose creation of regional fire authority

A plan spearheaded by three Westport-area men would combine fire districts between Westport and Tokeland with the City of Westport into one regional fire authority. “It would take the four fire districts we have here and combine them with the City of Westport Fire Department,” said Westport Chief Dennis Benn.

Lorenzo VFD (TX) Receives Military Vehicle, Foam-Unit Grant

The Lorenzo Volunteer Fire Department announced on Monday the department received a surplus military vehicle through the Department of Defense Firefighter Property Program along with a $20,000 grant for a slip-on unit from the Texas A&M Forest Service.
Through the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program,volunteers were able to obtain a Stewart Stevenson cargo truck and convert it to a firefighting apparatus by painting it a non-military color, adding side rails and the slip-on unit with foam capability making it service-ready, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service news release.
