FDNY hits record number of black, Asian, Latino and women recruits for entrance exam

After several delays to try and attract more FDNY candidates, the filing for the city’s upcoming firefighter exam has finally closed — with historic gains in the number of African-Americans, Asians, Latinos and women who applied. The FDNY had planned to close filing on April 25 for the highly competitive firefighter entrance exam that will be given in the fall.

Pedestrian struck, killed by freight train in Kent

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train Friday morning in Kent, officials said. The deadly accident took place at about 6 a.m. near the Willis Street crossing. The train was heading north toward Everett, carrying a load of big empty tubs, when it struck a man who was on the tracks, said BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas.

New Asotin County Firework Ordinance now in effect

The Fourth of July is right around the corner, but with the fun and celebration comes some rules and regulations. A year ago, Asotin County passed a new ordinance to help cut down on confusion, by creating a countywide standard for when and how long fireworks can be used. That ordinance is now in effect and officials will be enforcing it.
