After several delays to try and attract more FDNY candidates, the filing for the city’s upcoming firefighter exam has finally closed — with historic gains in the number of African-Americans, Asians, Latinos and women who applied. A pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train Friday morning in Kent, officials said. The deadly accident took place at about 6 a.m. near the Willis Street crossing. The train was heading north toward Everett, carrying a load of big empty tubs, when it struck a man who was on the tracks, said BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas.
