Volunteer fire departments face challenges with recruitment and retention

Proposal would allow Georgia firefighters to bring guns into station

Fire departments around metro Atlanta are making drastic security changes after several break-ins of on-duty firefighters’ vehicles. One local fire chief’s proposal would allow firefighters to bring handguns into fire stations. Morrow Fire Chief Roger Swint presented the policy to Morrow City Council on April 25.

Update: Dallas Paramedic Shot Treating Shooting Victim; Gunman, 2nd Person Found Dead

The gunman suspected of opening fire on and critically wounding a Dallas paramedic providing aid to a shooting victim Monday morning has been found dead inside a home along with another deceased person, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings confirmed Monday afternoon. The injured Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedic is in critical but stable condition and has been moved to the ICU after undergoing surgery.

Fire Chief Offers Alternative to Expanding Belle Haven (CA) Station

Instead of building a new, bigger fire station in Menlo Park's Belle Haven neighborhood -- a plan that has drawn the ire of local residents -- Menlo Park Fire Protection District Chief Harold Schapelhouman has suggested the district work to build a new station in the industrial area around Belle Haven where most of the growth is taking place.
A new station elsewhere was one of the alternatives Chief Schapelhouman gave to the several dozen residents who came to a community meeting in the fire district's Chilco Street fire station on Saturday, April 29.

The neighbors let the chief and the three fire board members in attendance know that they don't like the original proposal to rebuild their 22-year-old neighborhood fire station so it can handle the neighboring industrial district's new and planned development.
