The city, county and a local fire district recently sued several major pharmaceutical companies and a medical distribution firm, charging them with damaging the local economy by promoting the use of opioid painkillers they knew to be dangerous and extremely addictive. The 52-page complaint was filed in Superior Court late last month by two private law firms on behalf of Stockton, San Joaquin County and the Montezuma Fire Protection District, which serves unincorporated portions of southeast Stockton.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a blaze that swept through a homeless encampment in Federal Way Saturday night. It's not clear if anyone was hurt. The camp sits in the woods near Pacific Highway South. Firefighters say it was difficult to reach the fire because of the terrain. Crews used about 500 feet of hose to reach the flames.

Firefighters contained a brush fire that sent a huge plume of smoke over Tukwila Saturday and almost spread to a nearby strip mall. Firefighters initially responded to the brush fire along South 146th Street and say flames grew quickly. Crews got the fire under control and prevented it from spreading further.

All that’s left is a chimney. A waterfront home in Wauna went up in flames Saturday morning and burned to the ground. The Key Peninsula Fire Department was dispatched to the home in the 8900 block of 128th Street Northwest about 9:15 a.m., Chief Guy Allen said. They came down the long driveway to find much of the home in flames and took a defensive approach to save two nearby structures, Allen said.
