New Augusta (ME) Fire Station Designed for Faster Response to City's Northern Parts

AUGUSTA - The city's new fire station took center stage Thursday evening when the mayor, city councilors and others arrived for a ribbon-cutting event at the station, which is designed to help get firefighters to businesses and homes north of the city much faster. The bays at North Station No.

While the new single-story station lacks a fire pole for firefighters to descend quickly from a top floor, almost every feature of the building can be run via information technology components.

The large building has a secure living and office area for firefighter-paramedics on one side of the building.

It includes a fitness area to help the Fire Department’s personnel stay in shape to lift what Audette said was an average of 1,200 pounds of human weight per shift. Those working out can be viewed through a large window from the living room and kitchen area — another safety feature.

West Pierce paramedic accused of stealing drugs from ambulances

A West Pierce firefighter is accused of stealing various prescription drugs from ambulances and replacing them with saline to support his addiction. The 42-year-old paramedic was arrested Thursday and booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of unlawful possession of a controlled substance. He is expected to appear in court Friday.

California: Inmate firefighter dies from injuries

An inmate firefighter died due to injuries sustained while working on a fire line Wednesday, according to the California Department or Corrections Rehabilitation(CDCR). According to the CDCR, the inmate, 26-year-old Matthew Beck, died after a 120-foot-tall tree fell on him while he was working on a fire line in Humboldt County.

Report yields new details in 2014 Yosemite air tanker crash

The 2014 fatal crash of an air tanker fighting a forest fire in Yosemite National Park came just after the pilot was warned to avoid a tree to the right but then struck trees to the left, according to a National Transportation Safety Board report.
