Homeowners' dog may be responsible for costly Vancouver house fire

A costly Thursday afternoon house fire in Vancouver may have been due to the dog going after some food near the stove, an investigation determined. "No one was home at the time of the fire but Jake the dog," said Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli. The damaged home is in the Arnada neighborhood, where fire crews responded just after 1 p.

Valley Regional Fire Authority recognizes long-serving volunteer in Auburn

The Valley Regional Fire Authority (VRFA) recently recognized volunteer Barbara Saelid for 17 years of dedicated service to the legacy Auburn Fire Department and the VRFA. Saelid began volunteering under former Auburn Fire Department Chief Bob Johnson and helped with many administrative tasks, including sorting reports and counting and separating school flyers.

FDNY firefighter dies after he falls five stories off roof while battling blaze

It was a routine call like so many others across William Tolley’s 14 years with the FDNY, a two-alarm apartment fire — until something went horribly, inexplicably wrong. Tolley, 42, the married father of an 8-year-old girl, died after a bizarre five-story plunge while working on the roof of a Queens building hit by a small blaze three floors below, officials said.

New Jersey town plans to can firefighters after OT settlement

A plan to eliminate Deal's three paid firefighter positions, which cost as much as $500,000 a year, comes about a month after the borough settled a claim that it did not pay the men overtime, the firefighters' attorney confirmed. Labor attorney Jim Mets, who represents the firefighters, said he is considering a retaliation lawsuit against the borough.
