Grant will buy Lacey Fire some much needed gear

Lacey firefighters will soon be sporting some new gear, thanks to a $21,600 grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. The grant will be used to purchase new bunker gear, the protective clothing firefighters wear when entering burning buildings, according to Lacey Fire District 3. Bunker gear is replaced at least every 10 years, or following damage and wear and tear.

Police: Driver speeding at 100 mph causes fiery near-fatal crash in Kent

A 48-year-old Tacoma man is fighting for his life after his car was hit head-on by another driver who was speeding to work, Kent police said. The collision happened on Kent's West Valley Highway near 216th Street just before 4 a.m., officials said. Police say the causing driver, a 20-year-old Covington man, was speeding at over 100 mph because he was running late to work.

BRF Fire Department Has New Fire Truck

After more than three years of fundraising, the BRF Fire Department has a new heavy rescue truck in its fleet. Steve Schreiber, the fire chief of the BRF Fire Department says this is a needed upgrade. "It is replacing our 1993 heavy rescue truck that is underpowered and getting tired.
The new truck includes several upgrades including having headsets for each of the firefighters in the truck, which allows everyone to be on the same page before they arrive on-scene.

The approximately 4,415-square-foot station was built adjacent to the existing fire house. Construction began on Aug. 1 and addressed issues around accessibility, mold and exhaust fumes.

Baltimore fire union calls for protective vests for medics, citing uptick in attacks

Emergency medical responders are being attacked in Baltimore more frequently than in the past and should be equipped with protective vests, Rick Hoffman, president of the local firefighters' and EMS workers union, said Wednesday. "Obviously everyone knows we are in a very dangerous city now, and the way our EMS system works, [city residents] dial 911 and we're there in normally minutes, which means we beat the police there a lot," Hoffman said.
