On Monday morning, one of Spokane’s several hundred zombie properties caught fire. The one-story home on West Cleveland Avenue should have been empty. It was in foreclosure for nearly two years after the mortgage-holder died, and a court ordered its sale last October to pay its creditor. But that didn’t keep the squatters out, and when those occupants tried to refill a kerosene stove, a fire ignited.

The Chehalis City Council on Monday night approved an increase in rates as part of an update to an interlocal agreement with the Riverside Fire Authority for fire marshal services. The change will result in a flat rate of $10,000, or $1,666.66 a month, for Jan. 1 through June 31. The hourly rate was previously $58.

PHOTO: Over the weekend one of Clark County Fire District 10’s stations was damaged and authorities are investigating. Station 4, located at 9813 NE Cedar Creek Road, Amboy, is unmanned. At about midnight Friday a neighbor heard a loud noise coming from the direction of the building. Later it was noticed that part of the brick wall on the front side of the building had been smashed.
