Fire Chief Says Bloomington (IL) Needs 6th Fire Station

Fire Chief Brian Mohr said Bloomington's 2016 fire statistics reflect the city's need for a new station on the northeast side and a second ambulance crew at its headquarters station near downtown.
"Our biggest problem in the northeast is travel distance so we need to build a station and put a resource in that location in order to reduce (response) times," said Mohr after presenting the department's statistical annual report to the City Council Monday.

Currently, it can take up to 12 minutes for a fire engine to show up in that quadrant because of the distance from the nearest current stations, he said.

He also noted the over-utilization of the headquarters station on Lee Street just west of downtown as a factor for the department last year meeting the response time national benchmark of six minutes 66.5 percent of the time for EMS calls.

Pingree Grove (IL) Fire Stations Would Cost $8.5 Million

The Pingree Grove and Countryside Fire Protection District will have a referendum on the ballot April 4 asking voters permission to borrow $8.5 million to build two new fire stations. The goal is to be better positioned geographically to reduce response times for an increasing population, Fire Chief Mitch Crocetti said.
The district has three fire stations, one of which -- Station 4 on Plank Road -- would be closed and sold if the two new ones are built.

The district would repay the bonds with $2 million out of its general fund and $6.5 million with a 20-year property tax increase that would amount to about $117 per year for a house valued at $300,000, Fire Chief Mitch Crocetti said.

Lexington (KY) Next Fire Station in Fast-Growing Neighborhood

Construction should begin this fall on a new, two-story fire station off Citation Boulevard and Magnolia Springs Drive, Lexington fire officials said Tuesday. Fire station 24 will take more than 13 months to build. Construction bids should be released in August with work beginning in mid-October, said Eric Chambers, chief architect for Brandstetter Carroll, the architect.
There are 23 fire stations in Fayette County. This is the first new station since 2007.

Mayor Jim Gray had set aside $5.2 million in the current-year budget for the 12,000-square-foot station.

Rapid population growth on the city's west side created the need for another fire station. The closest fire station to Masterson Station, one of the state's largest neighborhoods, is on Leestown Road. That station was built in 1952.
