Black Tacoma firefighter group says nepotism, not ban the box, is at fault in Mueller case

A group of black Tacoma firefighters said they won’t allow department leadership to blame minority applicants and the city’s hiring policy for what happened with Ramsey Mueller, the son of a deputy chief and a probationary firefighter who died of a heroin overdose days after showing up late to work and nearly hitting another vehicle while driving a firetruck.

Goodwill Ambulance (PA) Breaks Ground

Officials of Goodwill Hose Co. Ambulance Association in Flemington gathered under a brilliantly blue sky before lining up to sink their gold-gilded shovels into the ground Monday afternoon.

The association is celebrating its 75th anniversary in huge style this year, with the construction of a new $775,000 facility. When finished, the six-bay facility will cover 73,000 square feet and will provide an area for staff, training and equipment storage as well as the garage area.

Chicago's not alone in facing these challenges. Most cities are seeing big drops in fire calls and big jumps in medical calls. But few are really reforming their departments to meet this changing emergency landscape.
