Growing Traffic Increases Fire Department Response Times In San Diego

Worsening traffic congestion in San Diego is increasing fire department response times, according to a report delivered to the City Council's Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee Wednesday. The presentation from the consultant Citygate Associates was a follow-up to a 2010 study that quantified the need for more fire stations and determined which locations were most urgent.
According to the update, an analysis found that during normal traffic periods, only 74 percent of the city's public streets were within 5 minutes travel time of an active fire station. Five-minute coverage at morning and afternoon commute hours was reduced to 51 percent of roadways.

Only 6 percent of city streets were quickly reachable during commute hours for first-alarm responses in which multiple units have to travel across larger sections of the city, the report said. That's even though the first- alarm standard is three minutes longer.

Fire Stations Added to Places to Get Addiction Help in LaPorte (IN)

Early results of a recent expansion of a program allowing heroin users to get help without being arrested are encouraging, public officials say. The idea is to eliminate any fear that some individuals have of the police so more addicts come forward.
About a half dozen heroin users went to the police station to get help since the program, with its guarantee of not being arrested or interrogated, started in June, Klimczak said. On March 1, all three of the city's fire stations were added as safe places to go to seek help and on Monday, the first individual showed up at the fire station on the city's southwest side.

Phoenix Fire Apparatus Damaged at Fire Station by Trespassing Woman

A woman was found sitting in a fire engine after damaging another fire truck while it was parked at the station. Court records show that on March 5, a woman who was found sitting in a fire truck had already cut wires on one fire truck and damaged other equipment.
It appears the woman, who police say has mental health issues, either jumped the gate or snuck in as a fire truck was leaving. While inside the fire station the woman sat in all four fire trucks, cutting wires on a hazardous material truck. Police say the wires went to the radio, chemical detectors, headsets and other equipment.
