Georgia firefighters want override after veto of cancer legislation

Georgia firefighters still hoppin’ mad over Gov. Nathan Deal’s veto earlier this year of cancer legislation related to their work have vowed an even stronger comeback for the coming legislative session that begins Jan. 9 — including a push to override the veto. Jim Daws, president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Georgia, sent a notice Monday calling on colleagues to contact their state lawmakers to back the effort.

Delaware fire chief urged to seek more funds, reconsider station closures

Two Wilmington City Council members say if the city's Fire Department needs more funds to keep stations open, all it needs to do is ask. Council members Bob Williams, who has been a vocal supporter of the Fire Department, and Sherry Dorsey-Walker joined members of International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1590 on Tuesday afternoon across from Station 6 on North Union Street.

New Mexico firefighter catches suspect stealing his gear

When Miguel Rivas woke up before dawn Monday and went for a drink of water, he noticed a burglar taking some of his firefighter equipment from his car in the driveway. He grabbed his shotgun, ran outside with his two terrier- and pit bull-mixed dogs and held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived, according to a police report.

Clark County council approves fire safety inspection ordinance

The Clark County council unanimously approved an ordinance on Tuesday that will increase the frequency of fire safety inspections of businesses located in unincorporated areas of the county. Under the current code, inspectors conduct annual inspections only of businesses that are at a higher risk of catching fire such as schools, medical centers, hotels and motels, as well as manufacturing facilities and other companies that use certain flammable chemicals or materials.
