There will soon be a new fire truck at the Hancock Fire Department, and according to Mark Dennis it's a good investment. Dennis, a Hancock firefighter and a member of the department's Truck Committee, said the $357,000 2017 pumper truck is being constructed at Custom Fab & Body of Marion, Wisconsin.
Dennis said the new truck will replace a 1999 pumper truck, which was recently sold to the Franklin-Quincy Fire Department with the intention of getting a new truck for Hancock. Because of a mutual aid agreement, that truck will be available if needed until the new truck arrives.
"If we did have a fire in Hancock, they would respond," he said.
With the new pumper truck, Dennis said the department will have three vehicles, including a 2005 pumper and a 2000 ladder truck, which also carries water.
As the other trucks reach their expected age of effective use, Dennis said the city will consider replacing them.
The new truck will hold 1,000 gallons of water and 25 gallons of foam concentrate, which is mixed with water. It will have a 1,250 gallons-per-minute pump with a compressed air foam system, a cab, which can seat up to five firefighters in full gear, 5,000-watt generator, which will provide electricity for power tools and a telescoping light tower, which will rise 20 feet above the truck and will rotate 360 degrees.
Hoses aren't part of the package for the new truck, either, Dennis said.
"We have all of our hoses," he said.
Dennis said he and other members of the department have taken trips to Wisconsin to see the progress of the truck construction.
