The National Volunteer Fire Council

Each spring, the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) honors a firefighter who has provided a lifetime of service, someone whose accomplishments embody the philosophy of fire prevention, an outstanding junior firefighter, and an exemplary junior firefighter program. All recipients receive a personalized award and national recognition. The nomination period for the NVFC’s four annual awards is now open, with applications due by 5pm EST on February 1, 2017. Learn more about each award and submit your nominations at www.nvfc.org/awards.

The NVFC Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by Rosenbauer, recognizes a volunteer firefighter who has served at least 20 years and has made a major contribution or achieved significant accomplishments in the volunteer fire service at the local, state, and/or national level. The nominee must have demonstrated superior dedication to the volunteer fire service, been active in their state firefighters’ association, and have positively impacted the community through the fire service or other volunteer activities. The recipient will receive a trip for themselves and a guest to the NVFC Spring Meeting Awards Banquet on April 7, 2017, in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC.

The NVFC Fire Prevention and Education Award, sponsored by Nest, honors an individual who has made remarkable efforts in the area of fire prevention. Recipients may be volunteer firefighters or non-operational volunteers (such as Fire Corps members). Nominees must have made a major contribution or played a key role in a significant accomplishment in the field of fire prevention, demonstrated innovation in establishing and enacting goals and/or obtaining funding for the protection of the public through fire prevention and life safety programs, and have demonstrated success in the area of fire prevention. The recipient and a guest will receive a trip to NVFC Awards Banquet.

The Junior Firefighter of the Year Award honors a junior firefighter, cadet, or Explorer who has shown extraordinary dedication, commitment, and achievements as a youth member of the fire service. The award recipient will receive a trip for themselves and up to two parents/guardians to the NVFC Awards Banquet.

Emergency trainees mistakenly exposed to deadly ricin at Alabama training center

Because of yet another mix-up with bioterror pathogens, a federal terrorism response training center in Alabama says it mistakenly exposed more than 9,600 firefighters, paramedics and other students to a deadly toxin over the past five years. The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Center for Domestic Preparedness blames an outside laboratory for a series of shipping errors since 2011 that resulted in the first-responder training center using in its classes a potentially lethal form of ricin powder.

Oakland firefighters didn’t assume burning Ghost Ship was vacant

As Oakland firefighters pulled up to the burning Ghost Ship warehouse the night of Dec. 2, they weren’t exactly sure what they were dealing with — whether anyone was trapped or what they would encounter inside — but they didn’t assume it was a vacant building. Public safety officials in Oakland have long been aware that people live and party in warehouses — some firefighters say they can tell whether one is inhabited just by looking at its exterior.
