A space heater sparked the fire that killed at least nine dogs Tuesday in Snohomish, officials said. The fire broke out about 2:45 p.m. in a shop building along Lake Place, near Blackmans Lake. A woman who lives in a two-story apartment there was working as a pet sitter, Snohomish Fire Chief Ron Simmons said.

More than 100 first graders in Moses Lake received some much needed warmth this week thanks to the Moses Lake firefighters Operation Warm program. As temperatures dropped in the single digits, the Moses Lake Firefighters Local 1258 distributed 120 new winter coats on Wednesday to children in need, making stops at Midway, Peninsula, Knolls Vista, North, Larson and Longview elementary schools.
