Maine firefighter car-washing flap signals bigger issues

With less than a week before final votes are cast in what is the most bizarre election I remember, I was pretty sure I'd seen and heard it all. There were certainly no surprises left. Then along came this gem out of Wiscasset, Maine. On Nov. 8, those voters will decide a referendum issue on whether or not to allow their volunteer firefighters to continue to wash their personal vehicles at the fire station.

FDSOA names Virginia deputy chief Safety Officer of the Year

James Williams, the 2016 Safety Officer of the Year, believes the role of safety officers is not just about keeping firefighters safe on the fireground, but includes improving firefighters’ physical and mental health and being proactive in cancer prevention and hearing conservation. “Think ‘big picture’,” said Williams.

Occupants run for their lives as flames destroy Pierce County home

Flames destroyed a home in Graham early Monday, but all of the occupants were able to escape with their lives. Crews with Graham Fire & Rescue responded to the scene around 2 a.m. after receiving reports of smoke and flames billowing from a home there. The house was fully ablaze when firefighters arrived, but all of the occupants were outside.

Dog rescued from house fire east of Port Angeles

Firefighters rescued a dog after a blaze ripped through a home on Blue Valley Road on Sunday morning. Firefighter Bryce McGinley found the family pet, Koda, under a bed in the back bedroom of the home east of Port Angeles, said Marc Lawson, captain for Clallam County Fire District No. 3. The dog was up and walking shortly after firefighters gave him water and oxygen.
