Dallas Stares Down a Texas-Size Threat of Bankruptcy

Picture the next major American city to go bankrupt. What springs to mind? Probably not the swagger and sprawl of Dallas. Indeed. Dallas has the fastest economic growth of the nation’s 13 largest cities. Its streets hum with supersize cars and its skyline bristles with cranes. Its mayor is a former chief executive of Pizza Hut.

Goreville (IL) Fire Department Gets New Fire Apparatus

The Goreville Fire Department celebrated the addition of a new fire truck Friday. The gently-used truck comes from Winnetka City Fire Department, just north of Chicago. The department also sold Goreville walkie-talkies, turnout equipment, a generator, and an almost new set of extrication equipment.
Goreville Fire Chief Ken Swisher says it only cost the department $10,000, which is much less than its value.

"A truck like this and everything on it would have cost us way over $100,000. We don't have that kind of money. It would have taken years to get that much money...so we could afford the $10,000," says Swisher.

The new fire truck will eventually go to a new subdivision outside Goreville called "The Peninsula."

Fire Apparatus Destroyed in Victorian (Australia) Grass Fire

A fire truck has been destroyed as crews battle to bring a bushfire under control near Swan Hill, in Victoria's north-west. The 400-hectare fire remains out of control in open country and is being fanned by strong, erratic winds.
Two New South Wales water bombers have been dispatched to assist 30 Victorian trucks and eight aircraft already battling the blaze ahead of a late wind change this afternoon.

Victoria's Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said one of the trucks was burnt after flames came over the top of it but no one was badly hurt.

Commissioner Lapsley said the fire was a warning for the season ahead.

"We always said that will be late December, January and February will be the critical period and that will play out to be exactly that," he said.
