Update: Officials say huge Everett blaze broke out when worker left fire watch post

A massive weekend three-alarm blaze at a former Everett recycling facility broke out when an employee who was supposed to stand fire watch duty at the facility temporarily abandoned his post and left the building, fire officials said. "With the building under a fire watch, someone must be on site around-the-clock watching for potential fires," said Everett Fire Marshal Eric Hicks.

Spokane City Council calls for stricter oil train rules following Oregon derailment

In a statement released Monday, the Spokane City Council called for stricter oil train rules following an oil train derailment in Mosier, Oregon, last week. They also announced an oil train community safety forum coming up at the end of the month. City Council President Ben Stuckart said in the statement that the City of Spokane must again address the issue of shipping Bakken crude oil through the Inland Northwest.

Seattle: Suspect arrested after several fires near the Jungle homeless encampment

Seattle fire officials said Monday eight to twelve fires were intentionally set near the Jungle homeless encampment. At least five fires were set Monday afternoon. Three additional fires were started around 5 p.m. Monday. One person was taken into custody by Seattle police about 8 p.m. Smoke was seen funneling into the air.
