The James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department is like a big family, members say. That family is moving into a house in May. About 135 firefighters and paramedics will say goodbye to the original Fire Station 1 next month.
First responders have answered the community's calls for service from the station at Richmond and Forge roads for 50 years, covering 110 square miles between New Kent and York counties, said station President Phillip Murdock.
Fire Station 1 was hand-built by volunteer firefighters in 1966. It will be demolished a few weeks after the move to make way for a longer drive way leading to the new station, Volunteer Fire Chief David Nice said.
