Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge Celebrates 25th Anniversary at FDIC International 2016

Participants will tackle the rigorous course designed to simulate physical demands of firefighting

What:
Entering its 25th year running and fifth year at FDIC, the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge® will take place Thursday, April 21 through Saturday, April 23. More than 200 firefighters will compete in the event, including former firefighter, Mike Diehl, who lost his arm in the line of duty. Diehl will make his comeback to Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge as the first-ever upper extremity amputee.

The rigorous course includes climbing the five-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb., “victim” while wearing “full bunker gear.” Participants will race against themselves, their opponent and the clock, simulating the physical demands of real-life firefighting. The Challenge seeks to demonstrate the rigors firefighers encounter and publicly recognize fire/rescue heroes in the community. The event also encourages a lifelong commitment to physical fitness, health and wellness throughout the fire/rescue industry – all in support of public safety.

When:
Wednesday, April 20

Media are invited to do pre-event stories and live feeds during the afternoon when organizers begin setting up the course. Media will be able to do on-site stories leading up to and during the events. Reporters will have the opportunity to try on the bunker gear, packs and equipment used in the challenge.

Scott Safety launches HushAir Connect 7500™ Compressor System

MONROE, N.C. (April 18, 2016)Scott Safety, a Tyco business, is pleased to announce the launch of a suite of new breathing air system products that include the HushAir Connect 7500, RevolveAir Connect and SmartTouch Controller.  Based on feedback from the fire service and industry professionals, Scott Safety designed the new compressor system from end-user input who demanded a smarter, simpler to use, cylinder fill station.

“This new compressor system is an industry game-changer,” said Scott Safety Marketing Program Manager Josh Burnheimer.  “With the improved safety features and fewer maintenance requirements, we really listened to our customers and gave them what they demanded – a safer, easier to use system.”

The next generation breathing air system utilizes a 7500 psi design to decreases fill times and increase capacity – an industry first! With a simple to operate user interface, HushAir Connect 7500 is safer to use and easier to maintain.

 Key Advancements:
•    Simplicity and ease of use utilizing innovative touchscreen smart controller
•    Speed and efficiency of operation
•    Improved safety with fewer maintenance requirements
•    Lower cost of ownership through its modular design, improved maintenance requirements achieved from a lower RPM compressor
•    Automatic RFID sensing technology utilizing a touch screen interface allows for automatic cylinder fill recording, automating the NFPA 1989 logging requirements
•    Continuous electronic monitoring of system performance, including  voltages, pressures, intakes, output, oil life, filter life, general maintenance and system performance
•    Quietest compressor on the market

Designed from the bottom up, the 7500 psi increases efficiency and allows more cylinder fills per charge.  With new automatic RFID sensing technology, the RevolveAir Connect is able to detect and select how to most efficiently fill nearly any SCBA cylinder with minimal user input or training.

The SmartTouch Controller integrates the breathing air compressor, charge station, and storage bottles to achieve seamless automation of the entire breathing air system.  New safety features include a suite of on board sensors and diagnostic tools, minimizing the user input by automating nearly all the processes required of the user.  The entire system has the ability to monitor and record various facets of operation, including cylinder fill record keeping, equipment status, error detection, and breathing air quality.  Additionally, the system is fully upgradable with its modular design.

Scott Safety will showcase the HushAir Connect 7500 Compressor System April 20 - 23 at FDIC, booth #2323.

Connecticut Fire Departments Seek $160,000 grant from FEMA

Spurred by changes both in construction and rail lines, three area fire departments are teaming up with the intent to provide more comprehensive services to residents. Meriden, Wallingford, and North Haven fire departments have applied for a $160,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency grant that would enable them to purchase specialized tactical rescue equipment and pay for related firefighter training.
The grant money would be used to purchase equipment to help with high-angle, low-angle, and rope rescues, machinery and disentanglement rescues and trench rescues, Meriden Fire Chief Ken Morgan said.

"We're doing it as a regional grant, which makes it more appealing to FEMA because multiple communities are benefiting from it," Morgan said. "Plus it doesn't make sense to focus a lot of equipment in a single department, this way we can spread it out."

The type of incidents for which this equipment would be needed are "low frequency, high impact" situations, said Wallingford Deputy Fire Chief Joe Czentnar, meaning they don't happen often, but when they do, they require a lot of manpower and equipment.
