San Antonio police and fire unions win round against city, city manager vows appeal

The city of San Antonio has lost the first round of its legal battles against the police and fire labor unions Monday when visiting Judge Martha Tanner rejected its arguments that a portion of its contracts with the unions are unconstitutional. In separate lawsuits, the city had argued that the so-called “evergreen clause” violated the Texas Constitution.

Grandmother, uncle narrowly escape as slide hits Burien home

Two people managed to escape a mudslide that severely damaged their Burien home Tuesday night. A second nearby home was also damaged and an evacuation order for nearby residents is still in effect. The slide happened sometime before 10 p.m. on Standring Lane in the north part of town, just southwest of the Salmon Creek Ravine.

Winds force firefighters to take defensive stand on Chattaroy fire

High winds fanned the flames on a house fire in the 3500 block of East Chattaroy Road early Wednesday morning, hampering efforts to extinguish the fire. The fire broke out just before 5 a.m. and, with winds gusting at 20 to 25 miles per hour, fire crews arriving on the scene from Spokane County Fire District 4 were forced to take a defensive stance to prevent the fire from spreading to other nearby structures.
