New South Whidbey Fire/EMS deputy chief brings ample experience to island

Not many would be willing to uproot their lives in the sunny state of Florida in exchange for the often rainy climate of Washington. Jason Laughren would. He’s South Whidbey Fire/EMS’s new deputy chief. He officially started his position Jan. 1 and replaces Assistant Chief Paul Busch, who served 35 years with the district.

Firefighters find body, rescue dog following Renton house fire

One person was killed, and a pet was saved after a fire broke out in a Renton home Friday night. Firefighters were called to the 300 block of Factory Avenue at about 9:15 p.m. and found the home fully engulfed in flames, according to officials from the Renton Fire Department. It's unclear how or where the fire started, but it quickly spread to the first and second floor, as well as the attic.

Lands commissioner fights to head off wildfires early

The 2015 wildfire season in Washington saw more than one million acres burned. That was not only a record, but was more than double the previous record in 2014, when more than 400,000 acres went up in smoke. In 2015 alone, the state’s estimated share of more than $300 million in total firefighting costs stands at between $160 and $170 million.
