Sunnyside firefighters get pay raise and health insurance premiums will drop

Firefighters will receive a 2.5 percent bump in pay this year while their health insurance premiums will go down. During Monday night’s business meeting, the City Council approved a union contract covering 15 firefighters that also included pay incentives for firefighters who speak Spanish. The pay increases will cost the city $27,000 annually while the decreases in health insurance premiums total $12,000 a year, City Manager Don Day said.

Cigarette in a can sparks fire at Pullman duplex

Pullman Fire Department officials said the improper disposal of a cigarette led to a fire at a duplex on Monday that caused $90,000 in damage. Pullman and Whitman County firefighters were called out at 11:31 p.m. to NW Harrison Street near the Harrison Tot Lot. The occupants initially told crews the fire had been extinguished, but when officials arrived there was smoke and fire on the front porch.

Jay (ME) Considering Fire Apparatus Frame Repair

 

Selectpersons will consider three options to repair frame corrosion on the 2006 Engine 3 firetruck when they meet.

Fire Rescue Chief Mike Booker gave the board a heads-up on the problem last fall.

The frame has "severe corrosion," according to Booker and Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere.

Booker contacted Greenwood Emergency Vehicles in Massachusetts, a dealer of E-One firetrucks, to see if the company would cover the cost of repairing the frame.

"However, the frame corrosion is beyond the warranty," LaFreniere said.
