Central Kitsap firefighters stage training in Silverdale

Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue firefighters Tuesday used the vacant Silverdale Community Center as a training ground. No live fire training was allowed at the aging facility due to safety considerations, but firefighters were able to "work on moving hose and keeping themselves oriented while tracking their air supply and planning their safe exit," Brett Twomey, chief of training and safety, said in a news release.

Yakima firefighters conduct annual ice water rescue drill

Winter weather means freezing waters, which means potential danger to the unsuspecting person. Should someone find themselves trapped under a frozen body of water -- firefighters want to be ready. "Our primary concern is getting them out of the water before they lost consciousness," said instructor Jamie Van Iterson.

Firefighters douse blaze that damaged hot tub, patio in Vancouver

Firefighters quickly doused a blaze at an east Vancouver home that heavily damaged a hot tub and covered patio area Monday night. Crews were called to 2013 N.E. 178th Ave. about 11:30 p.m. when residents at the house who had been using the hot tub earlier in the evening smelled smoke, said Kevin Stromberg, firefighter and public information officer for the Vancouver Fire Department.
