A 24-year-old Chatham County firefighter was killed in a traffic accident early Tuesday while responding to a call, officials said.
Joshua Mequaine Woods died Tuesday, according to The North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
The single-vehicle accident occurred around 1 a.m. near the 300 block of N.

VIDEO - Two young girls were killed and their mother was critically injured when flames tore through a home in Wilmington, Delaware Tuesday afternoon.
The blaze erupted around 4:10 p.m. inside a home on the 400 block of North Monroe Street. Witnesses say out of nowhere the home just exploded. "I tried to get in there and all I kept thinking about was the kids," neighbor Aaron McManus said.

Fire stations in the city are crumbling and in “poor ?condition,” with some even lacking functional smoke ?detectors and carbon monoxide monitors, according to a city audit.
The report, commissioned by Mayor Martin J. Walsh, also calls for $22 million in spending over 15 years to replace 29 firetrucks and bring the ?department’s aging fleet of pump and ladder trucks in line with national standards.

“We really saw the best of the community that night. It wasn’t just firefighters helping out, it was neighbors rescuing neighbors,” Battalion Chief Scott Roseberry said of the actions he witnessed on Dec. 26 after Garland was hit by an EF4 tornado.
