Follow Up: Eastside Fire Chief Lee Soptich to leave early

Eastside Fire & Rescue is about to see some big changes at the top, most notably the retirement of longtime Chief Lee Soptich. Soptich, 58, had earlier announced he would leave the position he first took in 2000 at the end of January. His plan now is to leave at the end of November. The fire service also will be losing Deputy Chief Wes Collins and Ingrid Anderson-Boyle, EFR human resources manager.

Elderly woman escapes kitchen fire at Pasco home unharmed

A fire broke out in a Pasco woman's kitchen while she was cooking Thursday, say firefighters. City of Pasco Fire Chief Bob Gear says the elderly woman cooking at her home on 14th and Howard in Pasco believed she had the fire under control. Fire officials say there was heavy smoke in the attic area.

Firefighters battle blaze at old Seattle Times building

Firefighters had to hack their way through welded-shut doorways to battle a blaze Thursday morning at the old Seattle Times building, fire officials said. Crews were dispatched to the scene, at John Street and Fairview Avenue, at about 6:50 a.m. after receiving reports of black smoke coming from the abandoned building.
